Statement I build tools used to amplify the senses, predominately vision, and draw the shimmering views seen through these ersatz forms. With basic materials like wood, silver, ink, and cardboard joined in seductive combinations, I explore the fluidity of perception. Shapes, numbers, and words in my work are liable to shift, leaving ornamental after-burns and transformed objects. I find models across cultures for my pursuit of looking at our interior and exterior worlds, including Newtonian telescopes, Chinese bronze hand mirrors, and space satellites. In my recent work I make arrays of inked and polished cardboard and wood telescopes. These are paired with painted interference patterns in metallic colors to form a two-part system: a lens trained outward and feedback that is variable. |
